Henry Ford Cancer Institute launches new initiative to improve minority participation in clinical trials
Henry Ford Cancer Institute is launching the Participatory Action for Access to Clinical Trials (PAACT) project to dramatically improve the representation of the African American community and other minorities in cancer clinical trials.
Supported by a $750,000 grant from Genentech, PAACT is a community-based research initiative in collaboration with the Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center (Detroit URC) that will address various barriers to trust and participation in clinical trials. Researchers and community partners will focus on clinical trials involving breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers, which are more likely to result in death for African Americans when compared to other racial and ethnic groups. The project is being implemented in partnership with community-based organizations and community leaders who are key stakeholders.
Novel method can improve the detection of circulating tumor cells
Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) is the most prevalent form of lung cancer, accounting for more than 80 percent of all lung cancer cases. Despite the aggressive nature of NSCLC, circulating tumor cells that lead to metastases often go undetected in the blood compared to breast, prostate, colorectal, and other cancers.
Now, scientists have developed a novel method to better detect the circulating tumor cells (CTCs) that are a telltale sign of metastases. The research was published in the journal

Pantheryx acquires Bayer’s TruBiotics in effort to accelerate probiotic category Colostrum-based nutrition and biotechnology company Pantheryx has announced that it has acquired probiotic brand TruBiotics and its trademarks from Bayer HealthCare.
The TruBiotics brand will join PanTheryx’s current lineup and ingredient offerings, including Life’s First Naturals, dairy colostrum, and prebiotics. The company said the new addition encompasses a full spectrum of supplements that support digestive and immune health at all stages of life.
“The acquisition of TruBiotics is consistent with our strategy to accelerate growth through acquisitions of synergistic brands in fast-growing strategic categories,” said Wes Parris, president and CEO of PanTheryx.
